Pavel and Anneliese Bauer are afffluent, secular Jews, who along with their six-year-old son Pepik and his nanny, fled to Prague when the German forces invaded Czechoslovakia in 1939. Pepik manages to secure a place on a Kindertransport, but he never sees his parents or nanny again.
