The Last Best West celebrates the diverse experiences of the women who settled in frontier Alberta, beginning as early as the mid-1880s. They came from many different backgrounds and countries, some reluctantly, some enthusiastically, and most without a clear idea of what to expect in their new home. Their stories of immigration, education, marriage, household work, paid labor, and childbirth form a “domestic history” of Alberta that is often more revealing than a traditional history. They talk of the loneliness and determination required to build a home, community, and province where there was once nothing but prairie.
