Jean Passerat-Monnoyeur, cast-ff son of a rich distiller, is 'on leave' from prison. He has served a sentence for murder. When the widow Couderc takes him in as farmhand and lover, with no questions asked, the jealousy and suspicion which divides her from her neighbours across the canal redoubles.
