While visiting a patient, midwife Sarah Brandt learns thata young girl in the rooming house has been murdered and is asked by Sergeant Frank Malloy to help investigate; however, Sarah discovers the girl is from a prominent New York family which intends to block every effort to bring the killer to justice.
