At the outbreak of World War Two, Meggie Elliot lives with her aunt and uncle in London. Intent on going to university, she joins the WRNS in a burst of patriotism and meets the dangerously exhilarating young aristocrat, Nicholas Cowan, who sweeps her off her feet.
