Leslie Thomas's travels have taken him to islands as distant and diverse as Saint-Pierre et Miquelon off Newfoundland and Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea between New Zealand and Australia, and to places more familiar, at least in name, including Nantucket, Fair Isle and Capri.
