Summary:
When a seaplane carrying an American surveyor first appeared on Argentia Harbour in the fall of 1940, none of the nearly one-thousand local residents could ever imagine the upheaval in store for them. As we know by history, Hitler's German forces were taking over Europe, England was in tatters and the British Government called upon the US and then-President F.D. Roosevelt to join the war in an effort to help bail them out: to put an end to Hitler's scheme to take over the world. As Newfoundland was still considered a British colony, and the Placentia Bay communities of Argentia and Marquise deemed a perfect vantage point for a major base of operations for the US Army, Navy and Airforce, the Land-Lease Agreement was concocted: the US giving Britain 50 used destroyers in return for strategic locations in Newfoundland where the US could try and stop the Germans from landing upon North American soil. Both small towns were taken for said purpose and, at first, tactics carried out by the US Government presented unimaginable challenges of every nature for the easy-going people living quiet lives there until then. Here is a tale of a handful of families intertwined in this true story. Their sacrifices aided the war effort in ways previously unfathomable, and also cemented relations and friendships which will long outlive this book and others like it.
