Grand Bank at the begining of the 20th century had a large fleet of offshore schooners engaged in the salt fish industry and was known as the "Bank Fishing Capital of Newfoudndand". The community had the third largest offhsore fishing fleet after Gloucester, Massachusetts and Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. How this came about is a question that had often been asked. To answer that question it is necessary to go back to the earliest of English settlement of this coast.
