Atlantic storms and litany of missing ships became more numerous than ever. Added to the ever-present natural hazards there were, in the 1930's and 1940's, new elements of risk for schooners - the rum smuggling trade, the threat of attack by enemy subs in World War Two and frequent collisions with large ocean liners steaming across the fishing grounds.
