Rumours is about a 13 year old girl called Gem Phillips. She and her three closest friends, Angel, Hazel and Lu have just gone back to school after a fortnight of school break. School is normal until she is accused of spreading rumours. Gem decides to take no notice but she later discovers rumours about herself and her friends. Its up to Gem to discover who started the rumours and why. Along the way Gem has to contend with her S.A.Ts, an awkward birthday party and the most popular boy in school as well as dealing with the highs and lows of being a teenager.
