A fictional retelling of the history of twentieth-century Germany as seen through the experiences of three ordinary Germans--Helmut, a photographer's assistant in 1930's Berlin; Lore, a teenager trying to save her siblings in the weeks following Germany's surrender; and Micha, a young man trying to find the truth about the past.
