In the years preceding World War II, a family adapts to capitalism's relentless growth within the Jewish community in the Polish city of Lodz. Max is the oldest child and is determined to make something of himself. His younger brother Jacob might be physically superior, but he lacks Max's wit and business acumen. When Lodz suddenly becomes a thriving beacon of industrialism, the brothers are torn apart by the class divide that sweeps the city.
