Summary:
The SS Neptune was a wooden whaler/sealer with 110 h.p. steam power. She was built in 1873 by Alexander Stephens & Sons, Dundee for Walter Green & Co., Greenock, Scotland. She came first to Newfoundland where ownership transferred to Job Brothers. The Neptune had a long, adventurous and colourful career. She went to the Artic in 1882 with relief supplies for the Greely Expedition. In 1925 she brought in the largest number of seals ever to arrive in St. John's in a wooden ship in one trip -- 42,242 seals. In 50 years of sealing she brought in over one million seals. She sank near St. John's in 1943 with a load of coal.
