Summary:
Written from 1965 to 1967, “More Incredible Than Fiction” tells the true story of how a broken and weary community of fishermen created a mining industry from scratch in the small town of St. Lawrence, Newfoundland, Canada. Told from a first-person perspective by one of the miners, my great-grandfather Rennie Slaney typed this account before his untimely death on the day of the Moon Landing, July 20th, 1969. Rennie was the latest in a long line of men to die from complications of miner’s disease, an incurable, debilitating cancer of the lungs caused by exposure to silica dust and radiation in the fluorspar mines of St. Lawrence.
