Summary:
When the fishing season is over, the holds full of salted and dried cod, the Saint-Jean returns to its home port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. All are present at the call except Joannes, his twin. Marie-Madeleine's premonition is confirmed. The girl cuts her hair, puts on her brother's clothes, joins as a boy on the same boat and under her brother's name. She then discovers the life of a sailor where one chore does not await the other. After a long voyage, the ship crosses the route of the icebergs and arrives in sight of Newfoundland, the fishing begins. The captain comes into contact with the Beothuk, Native Americans where he is drying the cod. One of them guides them towards the Straits of the Whales. Marie-Madeleine wants to go in search of the missing person, but she is consigned on board. She hides in the Beothuk's canoe, under the furs. When she signals his presence, the latter takes her to her twin. Rather than return to the coast, she encourages him to cross the strait to find her own brother who left with hers. Her intuitions become clearer and guide her. After a perilous crossing, they arrive at a cove where Marie-Madeleine finds the tomb of the one she came to look for.
