Summary:
The following sensing modes were addressed to determine the feasibility of their application to the detection of oil in and under ice: radio frequency, acoustic, optical, nuclear and gas sniffer modes. Of the five modes studied, it was determined that the optical and gas sniffer modes would not be applicable for various reasons. The other three sensig modes were more promising; however, each requires more study before applications can be categorically determined.
