The Forest of Champiegne is in northeast France, about 450 miles (80 km) north of Paris. It is a beautiful woodland area, visited each year by walkers, campers, cyclists and horseback-riders. As today's tourists enjoy the forest and splendid views of the surrounding countryside, some stumble across a clearing amid the oak and beech trees. Others come here already knowing about this open space, and they seek it out. The forest clearing is a wide, circular area. It marks a place where history was made - the very place where, in 1918, the Great War officially ended. Nowadays we refer to this terrible conflict as World War I.
